After week 11 the Houlgate College Football Ranking System is really showing some separation between the teams. There are no ties for any ranking position until you get to 18th place where Iowa is tied with Texas A&M.
In this week's Houlgate Perspective we present some snapshot analyses of the top seven teams:
Auburn - Week 11 turned out bad overall for Auburn's previous opponents, costing the Tiger's 5 points, netting a negative 3 in their total. However, the Tigers are still far enough ahead of the rest of the pack to keep their top ranking. The Tigers continue to impress with strong fourth quarter finishes, especially when teams like Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky and Georgia hang more than 30 on them.
TCU - Beating Utah and San Diego State recently, enabled TCU to gain some extra points. One advantage of beating H teams is that you cannot lose any more points if they lose again. Corrected ranking calculations put TCU at No. 2 after week 10 and the Frogs managed to gain some ground on Auburn in week 11.
LSU - Some of LSU's former opponents played each other last weekend, limiting LSU's chances of losing points. The Tigers netted a negative 1 point after beating Louisiana Monroe 51-zip. Having H teams on the schedule also seems to help at this late stage of the season, because you cannot lose any more ranking points if they lose.
Oregon - Stanford and USC continue pulling Oregon along. Oregon subtracted one Houlgate point due to Arizona's loss to Stanford. Other teams were either H-teams, didn't play or won. The Duck's offense sputtered against Cal, scoring a measly 15 points, well below their previous average of 54+ points per game. In spite of that, Oregon picked up three positions, so their Houlgate ranking is beginning to resemble something closer to their BCS ranking.
Oklahoma State fell to fifth place after beating Texas, a proud program that, for this season, is just one game away from the lowest grade in the Houlgate system. Too many losses by previous opponents netted the Cowboys a negative 2 points.
Michigan State - Week 11, for Michigan State was about as good as it gets except for the fact that the Spartans had a bye. All previous opponents except Illinois won their games and had the Spartans played last weekend and won, they stood a chance of gaining some ranking points. Too bad -- the Spartans dropped a position.
Boise State - The Broncos broke even with their Houlgate points. They proved the adage, that if you are not movng forward, you are going backward. A lot of people I talk to, really like Boise State and think they deserve a shot at the BCS title. However, the Houlgate System begs the question: who have they played? Oregon State and Hawaii are the best teams they've played so far, and Boise beat them on their home turf, you know that annoying blue field. Oregon State was reduced to an F team by Washington State and may go to H status when they play USC, Stanford and Oregon.
So far, it appears that Auburn and Oregon will face each other in the BCS Title game as both teams like to finish their games with lots of touchdowns. However, this isn't just any sport. This is college football. Anything can happen.
