Who is Deke Houlgate

Carroll Everard "Deke" Houlgate

By Deke Houlgate II

The original Deke Houlgate, my dad, moved around the country frequently as a "Preacher's Kid," son of the Rev. Joseph Everard Houlgate and Gertrude Emma Houlgate. He had an older sister, Louise Emma Houlgate, who became a school teacher after graduating first from University of California Southern Branch (now known as UCLA) and earning her teacher's credential at University of Southern California. A younger brother died as a child in his fourth or fifth year and young Carroll had a sickly young life, which he overcame with a devotion to
sports as he grew.

In high school at Ventura, Calif., he couldn't turn out for football, which wasn't offered. So he turned out for track and field. He set a school record in the 440-yard dash which wasn't broken for 30 years and was offered a track scholarship at the University of Southern California. He ultimately turned that down, because he had elected to write for the school newspaper. the Daily Trojan, instead.

The "stigma" of being a preacher's kid followed him to college, however, and his first byline in the Daily Trojan turned out to be "by Deacon Houlgate." He decided right then to make his pen name "Deke," and to drop all his given names of "Carroll" and "Everard." The name "Carroll" turned up in a Los Angeles newspaper when it reported an athletic feat he performed on the streets of Los Angeles, recorded by the LAPD. He witnessed the theft of a grocery bag from a middle aged lady pedestrian and took off in pursuit of the thief. After a three block chase he tackled the miscreant, recovered the groceries and was hailed as a hero by officers who followed the chase.

Houlgate had no more heroics during college, busying himself with part time jobs driving a cab, working as a hotel desk clerk and other odd jobs to finish SC. He met a coed studying pre-law, Dottie Penry of Fort Worth, Tex., and their romance led to marriage in 1928, officiated by Rev. Joseph E. Houlgate, his father, at the church he most recently built in Redondo Beach, Calif. At the time of his wedding, Houlgate was working as a proofreader at the Los Angeles Times. Soon thereafter he applied for a job in publicity and was hired at the Southern California Gas Company. This led to a promotion to special representative for the American Gas Association, representing the gas industry in Hollywood's fast growing entertainment industry. During the Great Depression, when many of his school chums and other friends in the newspaper business were unemployed or struggling along on a few dollars a week, Houlgate was one of the few among his peers who was employed full time. In that period the Houlgate friends met weekly at his home and brought the ingredients for a dish called Slumgullion. Houlgate supplied the beer and the stove where Slumgullion was concocted. Years later the friends looked back on those parties, where some of them experienced the only complete meal of the week, with pride.

During this period Houlgate compiled a statistical tome he titled "1,001 Scores." He also teamed with a friend named Nat Spieler to create a weekly football tip sheet, titled "Monday Morning Quarterback." After World War II ended he sold the rights to that title to J. G. Taylor Spink, publisher of Sporting News. For his rights to
the title, he took out an ad for his soon-to-be life work, "The Football Thesaurus."

"Monday Morning Quarterback" grew quickly into a sponsored tip sheet titled "7-Up Football Form & Digest," which he co-publshed with Bill Durwin of Pacific Palisades, Calif. The 7-Up paper, in tabloid form, was needed by the bottlers of 7-Up, which were excluded from bars and restaurants by union-supported truck drivers, who protected Coca-Cola brands. The 7-Up strategy was to bypass the bars when they could and place the products in liquor stores and markets. Eventually, a lot of bars and restaurants fell in line, due to the popularity of "7-Up Football Form & Digest." That tabloid expanded its name to "Deke Houlgate's 7-Up Football Form & Digest."

Houlgate had a staff that kept the readers informed and entertained. Starting with a young cartoonist at the Los Angeles Herald-Express named Karl Hubenthal, the Football Form added Maxwell Stiles, a former sportswriter at the Los Angeles Examiner, Lee and Martha Bastajian, turf writers at the Daily News, and others. That was the staff, but most of the work was performed by Deke and Dottie Houlgate, who made up the publication at the offices of the West Los Angeles Independent on Saturday night into the wee hours Sunday.

The publication began in 1937 and continued through 1942. By that time Deke Houlgate had been inducted into the Army Air Corps as a First Lieutenant.

It was only a matter of time before the 7-Up sponsors would seek another publisher. Houlgate's long time friend, Bill Schroeder of Helms Hall, took over the publication and continued it through the rest of the war. Houlgate continued his rating system, which was separate from the Football Form, and by 1945 was ready to publish "The Football Thesaurus," a complete statistical history of college football. Houlgate was released from the Army Air Corps in 1945 with the rank of major.

During his time in the Army Air Corps, Houlgate had several unique assignments. The first was as advance man for Sgt. Gene Autry, who enlisted in the Army in violation of his contract with P. K. Wrigley Chewing Gum Co., sponsor of his Sunday evening radio show. The Air Corps worked out a compromise that called for Autry to tour military bases in the U. S., giving performances for the GI's and sailors during the week and remote his Wrigley show from another base on the weekend. Houlgate and Autry, whose fame as a team owner came when he ran the Los Angeles Angels, became lifelong friends on that tour. Later, when Major Houlgate was operating the PR arm of the Western Flying Training Command in Santa Ana, Calif., he was prevailed on to do a special assignment at the Pentagon. On that tour he revamped the Women's Army Corps and created a PR campaign for low-flying B-24 bombers, which graduate pilots wouldn't sign up to fly in combat. His final assignment was to hype "Winged Victory," the Army Air Corps movie premiered just before the end of the war.

During his days with the American Gas Association, before induction into the Army Air Corps, he originated the phrase, "Now, you're cooking with gas!" and planted it with Bob Hope's writers. They, in turn, wrote it into one of his radio scripts and put it into the mouth of comedian Jerry Calonna, who made it nationally famous.

After the war Houlgate resumed his career at the American Gas Association, but soon left that position to concentrate on promoting his book, "Football Thesaurus," and his rating system. During the early postwar period he helped sportswriter John B. Old develop a basketball team that allowed periplegic veterans to play in their wheelchairs. That later was expanded to include all victims of missing limbs in every sport. Houlgate's friends in the Army Air Corps elicited his help with several projects, including the development of Air Force Academy sports on the same level with Army and Navy sports. Paul Helms, founder of Helms Athletic Foundation, elicited Houlgate to support athletic expansion in place of the typical statues commemorating war heroes.

Around 1950 or 1951, Houlgate hooked up with an SC alumnus, Bob Fluor of Fluor Corporation, an engineering company that built refineries and pipelines in the Middle East. Fluor decided to use Deke's football facts and figures to build a newsletter around. It was called the Fluor Forecaster. Fluor hired an artist, Harold Bordelon, to sketch his head shot that was used on the cover. The newsletter was angled toward keeping in touch with his key employees and customers around the world. Nearly all of them were college graduates and had ties to their alma maters.

Houlgate's funeral in 1959 was indicative of his influence in the world of sports. His pallbearers were all sports columnists and editors of leading Los Angeles newspapers.

Houlgate Rankings Today:

Amos Alonzo Stagg, the Grand Old Man of Football

He was the fifth of eight children born to Amos Lindsay and Eunice Stagg at West Orange, N. J., on Aug. 16, 1862, and was brought up to be a devout Christian who eschewed the use of tobacco and alcohol, nor the use of impure language. To prepare himself for divinity studies at Yale, he enrolled at Phillips Andover Academy. At Yale he joined Psi Upsilon fraternity and Skull and Bones Society.

Born during Abraham Lincoln's presidency, he was 7 years old when Princeton and Rutgers played their first game of college football.

Enrolling at Yale in 1884, he turned out for the baseball team, where he starred. He led the team as a pitcher to five conference titles -- staying on as a graduate student, which was allowed then. As a junior he turned out for football, earning a place on Walter Camp's first All-American team in 1889.

Naismith, one of his players at Springfield YMCA College, was later accorded the
invention of basketball. Stagg left Springfield to coach at the University of
Chicago, where his former divinity teacher, Rainey Harper, had been appointed
the university's first president. Stagg also coached the track team 32 years,
basketball one year and baseball 19 years. Stagg was one of the founders of the
Western Conference (Big Ten) and the American Football Coaches Association. He
was the first football coach to record 100 victories, 200 wins and 300 wins. His
eventual total was 314 wins, 199 losses and 35 ties.

In 1894 Coach Stagg led his team on a gargantuan road trip, starting on the West
Coast, engaging 32 opponents on a road trip in which Chicago won 10 games, lost
five and tied one, after Stagg's team had already completed a regular season of
5 wins and 2 losses with regular opponents. In the Illinois game that year the
outcome was not allowed, because one of the Illinois coaches played as a sub.

Turned out of Chicago in 1933 by mandatory retirement, when he was replaced by
Clark Shaughnessy, Stagg took up employment at College of Pacific (later
University of Pacific) for another sterling career as coach. He coached there 14
years through 1946. Stagg died at 101 years of age after serving as an advisor
to Stockton Junior College coach Earl Klapstein, one of his COP stars.

Alabama Wins Title Game; LSU Wins the Season Championship

In a display of ugly, but down-home defense, the Alabama Crimson Tide smothered the LSU Tigers by a score of 21-0 to win the BCS Championship Game in New Orleans, Monday night, Jan. 9. The Tide's scores did not result from three touchdowns as the score might indicate, but from five field goals and a touchdown with a missed extra-point.

It was ugly in that LSU never did get it's offfense moving. The Tigers gained only 92 yards and went almost three and half quarters before crossing midfield. Alabama pretty much controlled the game from start to finish and capped off their scoring with 34-yard run by running back Trent Richardson late in the fourth quarter, the only touchdown scored by either team in eight quarters, plus a single overtime this season.

Though many argue that Alabama deserved this rematch with the LSU Tigers, the Houlgate Rankings formula could not make that calculation. The Houlgate Rankings, which places a team's strength of schedule at the forefront of its determinations, showed that Boise State and Oklahoma State had played tougher schedules than the Crimson Tide. Both teams won their bowl games, both against Pac-12 teams Arizona State and Stanford. In the final calculations, LSU ended up with 40 Houlgate ranking points to lead the field of 120 College Football teams in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Oklahoma State finished second with 31 points and Alabama finished third with 28. Boise State's win over 7-loss Arizona State was worth one ranking point as six of the Boise State's previous opponents lost their bowl games, netting the Broncos minus five points to drop them into fourth place.

One-loss Houston captured fifth place followed by Arkansas, Oregon, TCU, Stanford and Michigan to round out the top 10.

Final 2011 Houlgate Ranking results and game summaries have been posted. The bottom line: Alabama wins the championship game, but LSU won the season-long rankings war.

Houlgate Perspective - Post Season - A Playoff Proposal

There have been many calls for a college football playoff for the division I teams. No one seems to be happy with the BCS system except perhaps the BCS organization and the school administrations that benefit financially from having bowl games. College football is a tradition-bound sport and some changes to the old traditions don't come easy. The college football championship is still mythological and without a playoff system, it will remain mythological and leave doubts on many minds.

I'd like to propose a playoff system that could help settle the score. The main arguments against a playoff system as I understand them are that A) The participating universities don't want to have an extended season. They want their athletes in the classroom and more games means a greater potential for injuries. B) The Bowl system has been very lucrative financially for the universities and they don't want to let go of that. Having that one special game on or around New Years Day has been a boon for the schools, so why give that up?

In crafting out a division I college football playoff system, I have to take these into account. At present there are 35 postseason bowl games scheduled for the 2011 season. They begin on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 with the New Mexico, New Orleans and Idaho Potato Bowls and end on January 9, 2012 with the BCS championship game. They take up a total of 24 days, about three and a half weeks, or if you think in terms of weekends, four weekends.

The sheer number of bowl games, 35, means that there are 70 teams competing in the post season. That's 58% of all the teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The records of the teams range from 13-0 (LSU) to 6-7 (UCLA). We don't need that many teams to make up a playoff.

Here's what I propose: The playoffs should cover a four weekend period, so we wouldn't need to extend the season beyond what the present bowl season already covers. The most any team would have to play are four games, enough to make it interesting without going beyond the four-weekend period. There would be 16 teams in the playoff. We would take the top 15 ranked teams according to the BCS rankings, which include the AP and Coaches Polls and maybe the Houlgate Rankings (smiles). The 16th team would be drawn in a lottery among the the remaining teams in the top 25. There doesn't seem to be much argument about who belongs in the top 15, maybe over who is ranked no. 1 or in the top five, but in this playoff system, they would all be in the playoffs anyway.

There would be four brackets to start with. Each bracket would have one team in the top four ranked positions, one team in the next four rankings, one team in the third set of four rankings and then one team in the last set four rankings. In the brackets, the top tier team would play either the third or fourth tier teams, while the second tier team would play either the third or fourth tiered team, with the intention that the top tiered team would meet the second tiered team in the bracket final. The winner of the bracket would then advance to semifinal and the winners of that will meet in the championship game.

The teams in the top 25 that don't win the lottery, may play in a bowl game, presumably against one of the other top 25 teams that didn't make it. Other bowl games for teams outside the top 25 may be scheduled as desired by the universities.

Playoff games may also be played at the traditional bowl sites like the Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, Orange and Rose Bowls, They can serve as the semi-final and final sites for the playoff.

In this system, only two teams will be required to play four post-season games. Everyone else would play less than that number. Traditional bowl sites may vie for being one of the playoff sites as the games will be played on more neutral turf and fanbases will still have to travel to support their teams.

This is how I see it working out a sweet 16 round robin tournament that utilizes the traditional bowl sites, making for a meaningful playoff. One side benefit to this is that this may curtail the expansion and contraction of certain conferences and eliminate the need for conference divisions and conference championship games. Eligibility for the tournament would be based on end of season rankings in which enough teams representing the conferences would have a legitimate shot at a real division I college football championship.

Houlgate Perspective - End of Regular Season: Call Me Deacon Blue; Alabama Ain't No. 2

Sorry folks, can't let this one go so easily. Alabama will play LSU for the Bowl Championship Subdivision (BCS) title on January 9, 2012. The problem here is that Alabama plays in the same Southeastern Conference division as LSU. The SEC had a conference championship and Alabama didn't get to play in it. Still, the BCS and pollsters deemed the Crimson Tide worthy of a shot at the title, most likely because of their field goal kicking contest with LSU.

Last Saturday, I listened to a sports talk radio host rant about Alabama. His sentiments echoed mine and he made some good points, mainly that Alabama didn't win a significant victory all year - never defeated a team that had won its conference championship. He concluded that that alone should keep them out of the game. I'd like to add that Alabama did not even match the strength of schedule of two other teams, one of which was treated rather unjustly, Boise State.

So rather than continue on a rant of my own, I'm going to prove that Alabama did not play a schedule that makes them deserving of the title game. I can just hear the SEC homers countering my argument, "Oh but you don't understand. We're the SEC and our teams are always beating up on each other. It's so hard to win in this conference." Yes, SEC teams beat each other up and it is difficult to win in that conference. But the same can be said for the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and the Big East conferences. Let's not forget the Mid-American, Conference USA, Sun Belt, Mountain West and the WAC while we're at it. Some teams play very well outside their conference, but have trouble getting past the middle and bottom feeders in their own conference. Just ask Oklahoma State about that.

Using the Houlgate ranking formula, which ranks teams based on the records of the teams it plays against, we can measure the strength of schedule. Let's take a look at Alabama:

Judging from the letter grades of Alabama's opponents we have five H (7 or more-loss) teams. One of them, Georgia Southern was an automatic H because it is out of the FBS division. The Crimson Tide also played three G teams (6-loss). LSU, an A-team, the only A-team remaining, was the best team, but Bama's schedule looks a bit bottom heavy. Two-thirds of Alabama's schedule ranged in the lowest end of the grading spectrum. When we compare the spread of letter grades over Alabama's schedule to Boise State's and Oklahoma State's, we see something interesting.

Boise State played four H teams and no G teams. The remainder of its opponents ranged from C to F. Oklahoma State played three H teams and two G teams, with the rest ranging from C-F. Both Boise State and Oklahoma State scored the same number of points. One of the newly adopted metrics in the Houlgate system is the Strength of Schedule Grade Point Average (SOS_GPA). In the SOS_GPA, we assign a value to the letter grade of a team's opponents scaling from 8 for an A team to 1 for an H team, then we take the average of all grade points for every team on the schedule. In looking at the SOS_GPA of Boise State's and Oklahoma State's opponents, they also come out even and clearly ahead of Alabama. Boise State and Oklahoma averaged 3.083 and Alabama averaged 2.75. The other thing the Bronco's and Cowboys have in common: neither team played anyone outside the FBS.

When we look at No. 1 LSU's strength of schedule, we see a team that played six teams in the G and H range, but also four teams in the B through D range with the rest in the middle. LSU posted an SOS_GPA of 3.307. They played one team outside the FBS, Northwestern State, but also defeated a couple of higher value opponents out of conference, Oregon (C) and West Virginia (D). To contrast that with Alabama, the Tide played Kent State (H), Penn State (D), North Texas (H) and Georgia Southern (H) in its out-of-conference schedule. With the exception of Penn State, Alabama played a relatively weak out-of-conference schedule.

Boise State also played and defeated George (D), which won the SEC East division title. The Bronco's other out-of-conference opponents were Toledo, and Tulsa, both E teams. Oklahoma State's out-of-conference schedule included LA Lafayette and Tulsa (Both E) and Arizona (H).

To say the Alabama deserves to be in the title game because of its strength of schedule just doesn't hold up. Had they defeated a champion from another conference, as the radio host suggested, or at least played Georgia, they could have made a stronger case for it.

Instead the BCS will reward the Tide with a game they don't deserve to be in. To add insult to injury, Boise State will play Arizona State, a G team, in the MAACO Bowl in Las Vegas before Christmas, a game that's not even counted as a BCS bowl game.

Oklahoma State fared much better, getting matched up with Stanford, a B team, in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2. Stanford is ranked 4th in the BCS standings and 5th in the Houlgate Rankings.

* SOS GPA means Strength of Schedule Grade Point Average

** FSD means Field Score Differential

Notes: Ohio State at 56th place, though tied with Illinois in points, letter grade and SOS_GPA earned the higher ranking than Illinois because they defeated Illinois in regular season play.

California tied Iowa in every category, except the Field Yardage differential, which isn't shown. This was the only case where two teams tied in points, letter grades, did not play each other and posted the same field score differentials. California posted more than 800 yards over Iowa in the final category, Field Yardage Differential and was awarded the higher ranking.

The Houlgate Perspective Week 15 - Breaking the Ties that Bind

My grandfather, Deke Houlgate I, left behind a very good College Football rating system for his day. Many games resulted in ties and tie games continued until the overtime rules kicked in in 1996. Deke addressed the question of how to score ranking points when teams tied. When a tie occurred, both teams kept their letter grade and each team gained half the number of points allotted for beating a team of that grade. For example, if Stanford, a B team, tied Cal, a C team, Stanford would remain a B team and gain three points, Cal would remain a C team and gain 3.5 points.

The subject of ties brings me to the question of why teams tie in ranking points and can anything be done to resolve them. The prevalence of tied rankings throughout the season is a subject that has concerned me since putting the Houlgate Rankings up on the Internet. In week 14, the de-facto end of the season there were 26 instances in which two or more teams tied for the same ranking. These ties were defined by two or more teams with the same letter grade, scoring the same number of points. Among them were 19 2-way ties, five 3-way ties and two 4-way ties, innvolving 61 teams, slightly more than half of all of the teams in the FBS. This led me to consider ways to break these ties, but without compromising the the legacy ranking system.

I came up with a battery of tie-breaker tests that would ensure the legacy element and distinguish each team in the Houlgate Rankings. To explain these factors, I would like to start with describing the existing ranking conditions and then present the tie breaking factors in sequence.

1. Ranking points: The sum total of a team's ranking points is the supreme measure of the Houlgate Rankings. If your team beats a team with a winning record, you get a handsome return of ranking points. They are the primary measure of your team's success. The team with the most ranking points is No. 1.

2. Letter Grade: The letter grade, derived from your team's number of losses indicates overall success on the field. When two teams score the same number of ranking points, but one team is an A the other a B, the A team has enjoyed more success on the field and deserves to be ranked higher.

3. Strength of Schedule Grade Point Average (SOS_GPA): This is the first of the new tests for breaking ties between two teams with the same number of points and the same letter grade. The rationale here is, if two teams are tied in such a way, the team with the stronger schedule deserves the higher ranking. The SOS_GPA is calculated by taking the grades of all of a team's opponents, assigning a numeric value to them and getting the average. The numbers start with 8 for A and ending with 1 for H. This calculation is done the same way a student's grade point average gets taken, except in the academic field, an A is a 4 and a B is a 3 and so on. The SOS_GPA is rounded out to the one-thousandth of a point. So, when two teams are tied in points, and have the same letter grade, the team with the higher SOS_GPA gets the higher ranking.

4. Who Beat Who (WBW): What happens when the Strength of Schedule GPA is the same? It happens and it happened in Week 14 more often than not. The next question to settle is, if the two teams are tied in points, letter grade and strength of schedule, did these teams play each other? If they did and one instance of this happened in week 14 (Ohio State and Illinois), which team won? The element of who you played and who you beat kicks in, only this time it pertains directly to the two teams in question. In week 14's case, Ohio State won the game, therefore Ohio State got the higher ranking.

5. Field Score Differential (FSD): Many teams still tied on SOS_GPA and most didn't play each other, what then? Since the teams didn't play each other, but fared the same against measurably equal competition, we drill into the game scores. We take the difference between the sum of all points a team played and the sum of all points scored against that team. The resulting number becomes that team's Field Score Differential. This gives us a way to differentiate how two teams performed against the same level of competition, but never played each other. The team with the higher FSD gets the higher ranking.

6. Field Yardage Differential (FYD): Okay, John, by now you shouldn't have any ties, but what happens if two tying teams wind up with the same FSD? You would think that the FSD would conclusively settle the tie and for the most part, you would be right. But after week 14 of the 2011 season, two tied teams ended up with identical FSDs, Iowa and California! To measure who is better, we have to drill down to their field performance. With ranking points, letter grade, strength of schedule and field scores all the same and these two teams never saw each other, we look at what we've determined to be the absolutely last standard of measure, the yards. We take the total yards gained by the team's offense, plus kick returns and subtract from that the total yards given up by the defense, including kicks returned against that team. The difference then is the Field yardage differential. The team with the most wins the tie-breaker. In this case Cal beat Iowa by a more than 800 yards.

Breaking these ties takes a lot of work, especially when there are so many to break. Ranking points and letter grades change fluidly throughout the season, so I decided that it was best to wait until reaching the end of the season to apply all of the tie-breaking rules, at least for this year. It's somewhat futile to apply them in the first half of the season, when there haven't been enough games played for all the Letter grades to appear. The BCS doesn't begin showing its computer rankings until about week 7 or 8, so there really is no rush. However, it may be feasible to bring the SOS_GPA, WBW and FSD into play during the latter half of the season, thus keeping the ties down to a minimum.

In conclusion, the credibility of a college football ranking system should depend on its ability to tell the world, who is the better team, especially when there is no playoff at the end of the season. Leaving ties on the table, means that that question doesn't get answered and therefore we have no answer to challenge.
